While you are learning how to use a metal detector properly start out with using your metal detector in your back garden or a deserted area near the home. This will help you understand and give you time on playing around with the settings and to figure out what works best for you.

Use your metal detector just after the rain-wet ground is much suited and it will make it much easier for you to find any treasures hidden deep under the ground if the ground is wet.

If you did not find something at a location yesterday when you were metal detecting you are unlikely to find something today. However, if you go back after a few months you might discover some treasures. Rotate between locations. This will give you more chances of finding treasures.

When you are moving the metal detector in a sweeping motion, be careful to overlap your sweeps so you do not miss any potential treasures. Do not move to fast you might miss out on some important treasures.

Try Keeping you coil parallel to the ground. Sometimes you might have the tendency to accidentally lift your coil at the end of a sweep, but be careful to avoid this, as you are losing potential targets.

Do not miss the faint signals. A common mistake is to only dig on strong signals, not true, do not skip those faint sounds because they could be great finds hidden at deeper depths under the ground.

If you hear a signal, take a minute to clear away the top layer of ground before you start digging. Once the top layer is moved, use your metal detector to do another sweep. If the signal is gone, it was probably a small piece of trash or mineralization in the ground.
